An airplane seat on the Oberalp

The Oberalp Pass connects Disentis Sedrun in Graubünden and Andermatt in the canton of Uri. Anyone who reaches the highest point of the pass road will now pass a very special bench: a wooden bench shaped like an airplane seat.

Since 2016, the Swiss leisure airline Edelweiss has been naming its aircraft after regions where the queen of alpine flowers is native, in keeping with the motto "Where Edelweiss is at home." Edelweiss also grows in the Andermatt and Sedrun regions. For this reason, an Edelweiss Airbus A320 was christened "Oberalp" in September of last year.

As a symbol of their partnership, the Andermatt and Sedrun regions placed an Edelweiss wooden bench in the shape of an airplane seat at the top of the Oberalp pass, right on the cantonal border of Uri and Graubünden. From this bench, visitors will enjoy breathtaking views of the landscape and Lake Oberalp at over 2,000 meters above sea level. Additionally, next to the wooden bench is a signpost indicating the direction and distance to some of the holiday destinations served by the Airbus A320 "Oberalp."

"We are extremely pleased that the Andermatt and Sedrun regions, along with the Oberalp pass road, which is so important to us, are being promoted almost worldwide," says Jost Meyer, Vice President of the Andermatt Municipal Council. David Birrer, Chief Operating Officer of Edelweiss, adds: "For me, as a passionate motorcyclist, riding this pass road is just as inspiring as traveling to one of Edelweiss' many holiday destinations. And on these trips, we are able to raise awareness of the Oberalp even further with our Airbus A320."

The Airbus A320, HB-JLS, "Oberalp" has been in service since August 2022 and flies to all Edelweiss destinations on short and medium-haul routes.
